Mathematics learning objectives

NUMBER

Pupils will:

• develop an understanding of numbers, the ways they are represented and the quantities for which they stand;
• develop accuracy, efficiency and confidence in computation;
• develop the ability to estimate and to make appropriate approximations;
• use number processes to solve problems in the real world

MEASUREMENT

Pupils will:

• develop a knowledge and understanding of systems of measurement;
• develop confidence and competence in using measuring devices;
• develop the ability to select appropriate units of measurement and to estimate measurements;
• use measurement in the solution of problems in the real world

GEOMETRY

Pupils will:

• develop knowledge of geometrical relations and shapes in two and three dimensions;
• develop a spatial awareness, and the ability to recognize the geometric properties of everyday objects;
• make use of the geometric properties of objects to solve problems in the real world.

ALGEBRA

Pupils will:

• develop the ability to think abstractly;
• develop the ability to use symbols and notation to represent and communicate mathematical relationships, concepts and generalizations;
• develop the ability to perceive patterns in a set of numbers and to generalize rules that govern patterns;<
• use algebra to solve problems in the real world.

STATISTICS

Pupils will:

• develop the skills of collecting, organizing and analyzing data;
• develop the ability to represent data in graphical form;
• develop the ability to interpret data presented in charts, tables and graphs;
• develop the ability to estimate probabilities and to use probabilities for prediction;
• develop the ability to use data to solve problems in the real world.
