Music Competitions

The Music Competitions are held in Term II in operetta years and in Term III in other years. Every student enters into the class round, and Cathedral Choristers are expected to enter one vocal section as a minimum.

House points are awarded for all entries. These points' totals are added to the points awarded at the House Choirs' competition in Term IV to determine the winners of the Boys' and Girls' House Music Cups.

Separate Music Competitions are held for the Boys' and Girls' Schools, and each of these is separated into two age-groups: Senior (Y7&8) and Junior (Y4, 5&6). Preliminary rounds are held in class music time, and Quarter- and Semi-finals are held, if necessary. Categories are Solo, Duet (or Duo) and Groups and cover all instruments, classical and contemporary, and voice. Depending on the musical ability within any particular year, it is usual for only three or four pupils or groups to be selected for the Final in each category.

The 2017 Music Competition timetable in Term III is as follows:

Weeks II & III: Class music rounds - unaccompanied except for vocal pieces

Weeks IV & V: Quarter-finals

Weeks V & VI: Semi-finals, where needed

Week VII: Finalists announced

Week VIII: Rehearsals with accompaniment

Week IX: Finals
