History & Geography

In the Junior School, this subject is known as Social Studies as it is taught on a topic basis which allows for greater integration with other subjects. The greater emphasis on social development in the Junior School programmes is reflected in this subject name.

In the Prep Schools, this subject is known as History & Geography to better reflect the emphasis on content knowledge and skills as distinct from an orientation towards the affective domain.

In deliberately opting for an emphasis and focus on content knowledge, the school deliberately turns aside from a constructivist model of learning such as is espoused in the discovery and inquiry learning models commonly found in New Zealand state schools. Rather, while skills in research, thinking, communication and decision-making will be encouraged and developed within the teaching of this curriculum, and positive social attitudes encouraged, the direct teaching of content will be the primary objective.
