Karate Club

Sensei Pat McGregor continues teaching his phenomenally popular ‘Go Ju Kai’ Karate Club on site at The Cathedral Grammar School.

Pat started karate seriously in 1974 while based in Singapore with the New Zealand Army. Through the Singapore Metropolitan YMCA under Sensei Horiuchi, Pat graduated to Shodan (first dan black belt). After returning to New Zealand, he was encouraged to start a club here and promote the style of Goju-Ryu karate.

Over the years, Pat has made numerous trips to Japan to continue training and to attend seminars and competitions with the top Goju-Ryu masters under the Japan Karate Federation Goju-Kai. This is the recognised body for Goju-Ryu in Japan. All his dan grade examinations have been under the Masters of this organization.

Within Karate New Zealand, Pat has filled many roles over the years and has been a New Zealand representative, national coach, national referee, and president of the national body. Recently, he has joined the National Dan Grade Council. Today his efforts concentrate on the clubs he has established in Christchurch, which have produced some of New Zealand's top karate athletes and several current national representatives.

Pat is the only man to have achieved 7th Dan Go Ju Kai Karate in the southern hemisphere. He has over 30 years’ experience teaching at all levels, including the New Zealand national team. 

Pat’s focus is on fitness and self-defence techniques, as pupils work to achieve gradings. Former Cathedral Grammar pupils William Currie (Y8 2010) and Alex Cohen (Y8 2011) achieved their black belts through training exclusively with Pat.   


The Junior School Karate Club (Years 1 - 3) takes place in the Junior School Hall on Thursdays, 3.00 - 4.00pm.  This is part of the Junior School clubs programme.

The Prep Schools’ Karate Club (Year 4 - 8) is in the Junior School Hall on Thursdays, 4.00 - 5.00pm. Please note that the club meets immediately after Boys’ School sport. Pupils should be collected promptly at 5.00pm. There is no school supervision after karate as Prep Room closes at 5.00pm. Sensei will be responsible for your child until you arrive. 

The tuition cost is $70.00 per term. There are additional costs for gradings and suits. All payments are handled directly by Pat (not through the school account).
